SUMMARY:Competent Person Training for Suspended Scaffolds
DESCRIPTION:Recommended for individuals that the employer is desiring to designate as a competent person for suspended scaffolds.  In addition to meeting the City of Chicago requirement for suspended scaffold user training this course goes more in depth and has an extended hands-on component to it.  The course is intended for experienced users that the employer is wanting to give the designation of Competent Person.  The course is an 8-hour class that ends with an 80-question exam.  Students who pass the exam with a 70% or better receive a wallet card that says they completed a Competent Person Course for Suspended Scaffolds.  Students who score below a 70% will receive a wallet card saying that they attended a Suspended Scaffold User Safety Course. \nNote: no training course in itself makes anyone competent.  Employers still are responsible to ensure that their competent people have the knowledge and abilities to recognize the hazards on their job sites. \nCOURSE OUTLINE: \n\n\nThe need for training\n\n\nOSHA discussion\n\n\nGeneral safety information\n\n\nJobsite survey\n\n\nWire rope\n\n\nPlatforms\n\n\nHoists\n\n\nFall arrest\n\n\nElectrical considerations\n\n\nHands-on build of a Rolling Roof Rig and 3-meter platform\n\n\nMotor hands-on demonstration\n\n\nThe course begins in the classroom where there is about 6 hours of instruction.  The class will then build Rolling Roof Rigs with assigned outreaches.  They will have to determine the number of counterweights to use on the Scaffold according to the counterweight formula.  Proper installation and discussion of Primary Wire Rope and Tieback Wire Rope will be demonstrated.  The class will also construct 3-meter platforms.  A motor and its emergency systems will be tested and demonstrated to the students.  Students who wish to are encouraged to operate the motor themselves.  Finally\, the students return to the classroom to take the 80-question exam. \nCLASS SIZE: \nClass sizes range from 4 to 20 with the optimal size being about 9. DESCRIPTION:29 CFR §1926.50(c) states; “In the absence of an infirmary clinic\, hospital\, or physician\, that is reasonably accessible in terms of time and distance to the worksite\, which is available for the treatment of injured employees\, a person who has a valid certificate in first-aid training from the U.S. Bureau of Mines\, the American Red Cross\, or equivalent training that can be verified by documentary evidence\, shall be available at the worksite to render first aid.” \nOSHA Letter of Interpretation dated January 16\, 2007 states that “OSHA has long interpreted the term “near proximity” to mean that emergency care must be available within no more than 3-4 minutes from the workplace\, an interpretation that has been upheld by the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission and by federal courts.” \nStone Mountain Access Systems’ Trainer is certified to provide the American Heart Association First Aid course.  This course provides basic first aid and safety skills\, equipping individuals to recognize and provide basic first aid care for injuries and sudden illnesses. Students will learn how to identify and care for a variety of medical emergencies\, including severe bleeding\, shock\, musculoskeletal injuries and other sudden illnesses\, as well as how to reduce the risk of disease transmission while providing care. \nCOST: \nPlease contact your local Stone Mountain Access representative for a quote. \nStudents will receive a wallet card upon completion of the training. \n\nPer CFR 29 §1910.1030(g)(2)(i) The employer shall train each employee with occupational exposure in accordance with the requirements of this section. DESCRIPTION:Recommended for individuals that the employer is desiring to designate as a competent person for suspended scaffolds.  In addition to meeting the City of Chicago requirement for suspended scaffold user training this course goes more in depth and has an extended hands-on component to it.  The course is intended for experienced users that the employer is wanting to give the designation of Competent Person.  The course is an 8-hour class that ends with an 80-question exam.  Students who pass the exam with a 70% or better receive a wallet card that says they completed a Competent Person Course for Suspended Scaffolds.  Students who score below a 70% will receive a wallet card saying that they attended a Suspended Scaffold User Safety Course. \nNote: no training course in itself makes anyone competent.  Employers still are responsible to ensure that their competent people have the knowledge and abilities to recognize the hazards on their job sites. \nCOURSE OUTLINE: \n\n\nThe need for training\n\n\nOSHA discussion\n\n\nGeneral safety information\n\n\nJobsite survey\n\n\nWire rope\n\n\nPlatforms\n\n\nHoists\n\n\nFall arrest\n\n\nElectrical considerations\n\n\nHands-on build of a Rolling Roof Rig and 3-meter platform\n\n\nMotor hands-on demonstration\n\n\nThe course begins in the classroom where there is about 6 hours of instruction.  The class will then build Rolling Roof Rigs with assigned outreaches.  They will have to determine the number of counterweights to use on the Scaffold according to the counterweight formula.  Proper installation and discussion of Primary Wire Rope and Tieback Wire Rope will be demonstrated.  The class will also construct 3-meter platforms.  A motor and its emergency systems will be tested and demonstrated to the students.  Students who wish to are encouraged to operate the motor themselves.  Finally\, the students return to the classroom to take the 80-question exam. \nCLASS SIZE: \nClass sizes range from 4 to 20 with the optimal size being about 9. DESCRIPTION:Recommended for individuals that the employer is desiring to designate as a competent person for system scaffolds.  The SAIA has an alliance with OSHA and the fact that the employer has sent his Competent Persons through this third-party training carries weight with them.  \nNote: no training course in itself makes anyone competent.  Employers still are responsible to ensure that their competent people have the knowledge and abilities to recognize the hazards on their job sites. \nCOURSE OUTLINE: \n\n\nThe need for training\n\n\nThe five most serious scaffold hazards\n\n\nDecking material and loading\n\n\nStationary scaffold requirements\n\n\nRolling scaffold requirements\n\n\nTube and coupler scaffold requirements\n\nSystem scaffold construction\nSpecialty uses of system scaffolds\n\nWall tie placement review\n\n\nStationary scaffold bracing\n\n\nCross braces as guardrails\n\n\nScaffold loads and load chart development\n\n\nHands on exercise\n\n\nExam\n\n\nStudents receive a comprehensive workbook with this course.  Classes should be scheduled far enough in advance to give the students time to pre-study the workbook.  This gives the students the maximum opportunity to be prepared with questions and also increases the scores on the 80 question multiple choice exam. \nThe course begins in the classroom where there is about 4 hours of instruction. After breaking for lunch the class participates in a hands on session which includes the construction of a small stationary scaffold and a rolling scaffold. \nThe class concludes with an 80 question multiple choice exam which is sent to the SAIA for grad \nCLASS SIZE: \nClass sizes range from 1 to 25 with the optimal size being about 10-15. The time for the course extends with larger classes due to increased discussion time. \nCOST: \nCost per student: $300 \nStudents who receive a grade of 70% or better receive a frame ready certificate and a wallet card valid for 3 years.
